Vejle Kommune - Citizen collaboration through Epiito Studio

Vejle Epiito Project

The Municipality has placed an Epiito Studio in their city planning lab, to visualize a 3D-model of the city.

Using the Epiito studio across multiple phases of the planning process is giving Vejle’s key city planners a whole range of new capabilities. They are able to gain insights from citizens, communicate with the community and advise decision-makers on matters of local development.

One of the key features of the Studio is that it is a multi-user environment, making it a shared Virtual Reality experience in 1:1 scale.

It is a great opportunity that school classes, families and pensioners can come in and get a sense of what their own city can become. Citizen involvement is an element of it, but that’s only one part of the idea…It is just as crucial to have the ability to invite politicians and city-level developers into the studio to experience the future that they must base their decisions on. We recently had a technical committee come through to walk and fly around a parking garage that is planned to be built at the station facing the harbour.

Visualizing climate change impacts

With Vejle being a coastal city work is already underway to prepare the area for the consequences of rising water levels.
Using the Epiito Studio Poul Skræ Cand.arch is able to simulate different weather conditions and water levels.

He simply causes the water level in Vejle Å and Fjord to rise one and a half meters, and suddenly most of the city is underwater. It’s so vivid that we can almost feel the water around our feet as we stand there on the floor of the virtual 3D cave.

Tender Projects

Used to review tender submissions

Poul Skræ also had a positive experience showing the Jury committee for the architectural competition to decide Vejle’s new vantage points.

It was the Technical Committee, so of course, they had read the descriptions and seen all the drawings separately. But I heard from them afterwards that the experience in the cave was a central part of their discussion

Giving committees and decision makers another way to experience the projects enables better construction projects

If we can foresee and plan better urban spaces with this 3D visualization, then the investment in the studio is quickly saved in comparison with failed construction projects.
